Massive Indian consultancy firm TCS to hire 500 in new Montreal office
India’s Tata Consultancy (TCS) will hire 500 new employees as it fills out its new Montreal office. The group is moving into a new 9,500-square foot workspace at 1255 Phillips Square downtown, reports the Montreal Gazette.
The information technology company, a unit of the Tata Group conglomerate, will hire about 100 employees immediately, and more than 500 over three years, according to a statement issued Thursday.
Montreal “is emerging as a very strong technology and artificial intelligence hub, which augments and complements what we’re trying to do in the market,” Soumen Roy, executive director and country head for Canada, told the newspaper.
The new 9,500-square-foot facility will probably be ready to open next month, according to the Gazette. TCS already has about 250 employees in the Montreal area and has been active in Canada for three decades. It also has offices in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.
TCS is a unit of India’s largest multinational business group, and has over 469,000 consultants in 46 countries. It had revenue of US$22 billion in its most recent fiscal year, which ended in March 2020.
The organization is headquartered in Mumbai, India and has its largest workforce based in Chennai, India. As of February 2021 TCS is the largest company in the IT sector in the world by market capitalization ($169.2 billion).
Interestingly, noted the Gazette, TCS didn’t approach the Quebec government for subsidies in preparing its expansion.
“Very intense deliberations go on before we actually go into a market,” Roy told the newspaper. “We have taken our time to move into very different countries, and we have never actually left any market. Montreal featured on our strategic roadmap. That’s the genesis of the decision. It’s a market decision.”
